Laundry · Clean the lint screen every load; vent once a year

Dryer vent cleaning

Clear lint from the screen, the duct and the outside hood — lint build-up slows drying.

Add to an item in my home

Steps

  1. 1Clean the lint screen
  2. 2Unplug the dryer (and shut the gas valve if gas)
  3. 3Pull the dryer out and disconnect the duct
  4. 4Vacuum or brush lint out of the duct and the dryer's outlet
  5. 5Check the outside vent flap opens freely
  6. 6Reconnect the duct without kinks and push the dryer back
  7. 7Run a short cycle and feel for airflow outside

Steps follow the sources listed. Your item's manual comes first.

Safety first

Unplug first. Gas dryers: reconnect carefully and check for gas smell.

When to call a pro

If the duct is long, crushed, or runs through the roof.
